WEST COAST COOLER
When American producer Brad Jones agreed to come to Australia
to make Skipping Girl Vinegar's third album, he gave singer
Mark Lang a call. "What's the studio like?" Brad asked,
"and what sort of gear will we have?" "Well," Mark replied,
"we're making the record in my shed." Brad - who has worked
with Missy Higgins, Melody Pool, Josh Rouse and Butterfly
Boucher - was not fazed. "Cool, man," he said. Mark laughed
when telling that story at a recent SGV gig. "That's where
all good work happens, I reckon - in a shed. It's a very
Australian record." The new, as-yet-untitled album follows
2008's Sift The Noise and 2011's Keep Calm Carry The Monkey.
"The more you hear this album, the more you realise it's
covered in West Coast," drummer Chris Helm says. But he's
not talking about the Eagles and the cruisy Californian
sound. "It's all about getting out of the city," he adds,
referring to Mark's coastal home, near Geelong. "The last
album was about me dreaming about living down the coast,"
Mark explains. "This record is all about being down the
coast." Before heading to Nashville to put the finishing
touches on the album, SGV are playing at the Caravan Club
on Saturday, 12 April. The gig will see the return of keyboard
player and the band's baking queen, Amanthi Lynch, who has
been on maternity leave following the birth of daughter
Rose.
HAIL MARY
Music and sport: the two greatest things in Melbourne. And
when we mix the two, it's even better. The Age's Rohan Connolly
is the standout music commentator on sports radio station
SEN, but Evenings' show host, Mark Fine, and his regular
co-host Stephen J Peak are also big music fans, and they've
got the vibe for local rock band Electric Mary. In fact,
Finey has called them "the best rock outfit in Australia".
Both Finey and Peaky are promising to be at Electric Mary's
gig at the Espy on Saturday (April 5). It's the band's first
show in 14 months, revealing a new drummer.
Electric Mary are also heading to the UK for Hard Rock Hell
VIII.
AMAZING PLACE
We can't get enough of Marcia Hines' poptastic new album,
Amazing, and we're pleased to report that Marcia has become
an ambassador for Record Store Day Australia (19 April).
"Nothing beats browsing the racks," Marcia says, "and as
I release my new album, that feeling of discovering a new
album and taking it home is still one of the most important
experiences that I think we as an industry can give our
fans." Head to recordstoreday.com.au
for more info.
LITTLE BIG MAN
We remember the great Jimmy Little, who died two years ago
today (Wednesday).
