WE NEED MORE WOMEN
Joan Jett was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame in the US. "There should be more women in the Hall
of Fame," she said. "And more women in rock." ARIA also
needs to take note. Since the ARIA Hall of Fame started
in 1988, 73 acts have been inducted, but just 10 of them
are female artists or bands fronted by women: Dame Joan
Sutherland, Dame Nellie Melba, The Seekers, Olivia Newton-John,
Renée Geyer, Divinyls, Helen Reddy, Marcia Hines, Little
Pattie and Kylie Minogue. Of course, the music business
has been male dominated, but less than 14 per cent female
representation is not good enough. Artists who should be
at the top of ARIA's list: Colleen Hewett (whose new blues
album is a cracker), Tina Arena, Kate Ceberano and Deborah
Conway. And how about the late Ruby Hunter, who should be
inducted with Archie Roach, and Clare Moore, who should
enter the Hall with Dave Graney. And don't forget Lynne
Randell, Jenny Morris, Wendy Matthews, Eurogliders, Baby
Animals, Frente, Sharon O'Neill, Spiderbait, Christine Anu,
Debra Byrne and Christie Allen.
GOOD SPORTS
Speaking of the Hall of Fame, shouldn't Stephen Cummings
and The Sports be in there? Howzat! can't wait to see The
Sports' three shows at Memo Music Hall this weekend.
STATE OF THE HEARTACHE
A mate recently asked, "Who's the best person you've ever
met in the music business, the rock star you like the most?"
Good question. The first name that came to mind was Nick
Barker. Howzat! met Nick at the end of the '80s, during
the crazy Reptiles days. Immediately, he was friendly, entertaining,
open and honest - which he's been ever since. And Nick always
appreciates any support. His new album, the self-titled
debut from The Heartache State, comes with a thank you to
legendary music journalist Ed Nimmervoll, "for always giving
a fuck". But being a nice guy only gets you so far. Nick
Barker is also a fine songwriter, one of our most underrated.
He's a no-frills rocker, in the Replacements/Stones mould,
but his songs reflect his personality - they're witty and
candid. Check out Clockstar. Rock stars are eternally young
and rarely confront growing old. But Nick sings: "Time is
tickin' and they ain't giving out any more. I got this old
clock up on my shelf and it chimes on the hour and I say
to myself, 'I hear you, buddy' … but I got one more in me."
This new album - to be launched at Cherry Bar on 9 May -
shows that Nick Barker is at the peak of his powers.
