Forty years ago this week, The SwingersCounting The Beat hit number one in Australia.

This week in 1987, the first ARIA Awards were held, at Sydney’s Wentworth Hotel, hosted by Elton John. John Farnham was the night’s big winner, winning Best Male Artist, Album of the Year (Whispering Jack), and Single of the Year (You’re The Voice). Crowded House won Best New Talent. The awards were not televised.

The first ARIA Hall of Fame event was held this week in 1988 as part of the second ARIA Awards. The inductees were Dame Joan Sutherland, Johnny O’Keefe, Slim Dusty, Col Joye, Vanda & Young and AC/DC.

The 6th ARIA Awards – the first to be televised – were held this week in 1992. Skyhooks were inducted into the Hall of Fame, and Yothu Yindi’s Treaty won Single of the Year.

This week in 2008, Mark Seymour released Thirteen Tonne Theory, a book about his time in Hunters and Collectors.

Happy Birthday to Mike Brady, who is 73 on February 28. Mark Evans, AC/DC’s bass player from 1975 to 1977, is 65 on March 2.
