THE FASCINATING BEKI COLADA
Beki Colada is a fab pop star. Cute, colourful and quirky. Of course, Beki - who grew up loving Cyndi Lauper and Missing Persons - was known as Beki Thomas when we got to know her in the '90s in Ballarat band The Mavis's, which she fronted with her brother, Matt. Beki then relocated to Hollywood, where she has formed a synth-pop duo called The Fascinated with producer Lionel Cohen. "I went on Craigslist looking for an actual human being to work with in LA as I'd only been recording and writing with artists in Australia and New York over the internet," Beki tells Howzat! "I was craving that feeling of being in the studio with someone again." The resulting album (which can be streamed at thefascinated.com) includes a song called We Are Fascinated. "The song came first. One day, after going through a million band names, we both excitedly agreed on The Fascinated. It seems to capture the sound of the music." The first song Beki and Lionel recorded for the self-titled album was Home. "It's about my never-ending homesickness and how I've managed to create a situation where I'm always missing someone. LA feels like home to a certain degree, but home is where the heart is, so it's in Ballarat, Melbourne, LA and New York! But, no, I don't miss the Ballarat winter." On her way to Lionel's studio, Beki would walk along the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, looking at the stars on the ground and thinking, "Here I am, doing what I love … still." And the album is everything that Howzat! loves about Beki's music. "Are you satisfied?" she asks in a song called Comfort Zone. "I'm satisfied with many aspects of my life," Beki says, "but I love to keep stepping out of my comfort zone for new adventures. I like to do what I love, even if I'm told I shouldn't because I'm 'too old' or 'it's a tough industry'. I'm satisfied with this album; it was great therapy writing it, and I'm now ready to start the next one."

MAL CONTENT
New PM Malcolm Turnbull has a couple of rock connections. He went to school with Rob Hirst; the Oils drummer was a year below him at Sydney Grammar. And he was the debating nemesis of Canberra's Steve Kilbey. The Church singer recalls a "huge, huge Labor man, who was the Muhammad Ali of high school debating". Steve's mum predicted that young Mal would one day be PM.

HOT LINE
