MILESTONES AND MEMORIES
AC/DC did their first gig, at Chequers, a club in Sydney, this week in 1973. The line-up was singer Dave Evans, guitarists Malcolm and Angus Young, bass player Larry Van Kriedt and drummer Colin Burgess.

Forty years ago this week, AC/DC scored their first number one album in the US when For Those About To Rock We Salute You topped the charts.

Ten years ago this week, Australia’s Betty McQuade, best known for the 1961 hit Midnight Bus, died, aged 70, after a long illness.

Helen Reddy scored her third number one single in the US when Angie Baby topped the charts this week in 1974.

Silverchair singer Daniel Johns married Natalie Imbruglia this week in 2003. They announced their divorce in 2008.

Happy Birthday to Gregory “Tex” Perkins (The Cruel Sea, Beasts of Bourbon, The Fat Rubber Band), who is 57 on December 28. The Easybeats bass player Dick Diamonde (real name: Dingeman van der Sluys) is 74 on December 28. Skyhooks’ Greg Macainsh is 71 on December 30. And Mental As Anything’s Martin Plaza (real name: Martin Murphy) is 66 on January 1.

And we remember Rowland S. Howard, who died of liver cancer, aged 50, this week in 2009. Nick Cave called him “Australia’s most unique, gifted and uncompromising guitarist”. And The Easybeats’ Stevie Wright died of pneumonia, aged 68, this week in 2015.
