CALLING ALL CARS TO THE HI-FI
It's been a big few months for Calling All Cars. Their not-so-difficult second album, Dancing With A Dead Man, hit the Top 20, and they went on tour with Foo Fighters and Tenacious D. After the Perth show, they asked The D if they'd film a short video to promote CAC's Big Day Out appearance. They liked the idea but would only do it if they dug the band. After watching the CAC set from side of stage in Adelaide, Jack Black approached the guys and said: "You called the cars and they came. We gonna do this video?"

The results can be found on YouTube, where you can also see the graphic aftermath of CAC's shortened set at the Sydney BDO. Singer Haydn Ing stage-dived during the second song, copping a stray elbow, which knocked him out cold. He woke up on a stretcher, with the paramedic asking, "Do you know what city you're in?" Haydn replied, "Nuh." He later realised where he was and begged to return to the stage, but the doctors said no.

Sometimes it's hard to fathom what's fact or fantasy with Calling All Cars. Their Wikipedia page claims that drummer James Ing spent two months in New Zealand, auditioning for a role in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. And the guys recently told MTV their Worlds Collide video was shot in Norway, "though it looks a lot like Woodend". One thing is certain - Calling All Cars are playing at the Hi-Fi on Friday, 11 May, and word is it will be their last headlining show for 2012. They're keen to head overseas, to make their third album, with a new producer. Both albums have been produced by their manager, Shihad's Tom Larkin. "As much as we love Tom, I think it's time we gave him some space and not overstay our welcome," Haydn says, "plus absence makes the heart grow fonder, or something."

Dancing With A Dead Man will be a hard act to follow. Zoo magazine gave it a glowing review, stating that "Dave Grohl should take some notes" ("Ha, yeah right," Haydn laughs), while the album's first single, Reptile, is up for Song of the Year at this month's APRA Awards. Has Haydn ever won any awards? "No, not that I can think of. And seeing as we're up against Gotye, I'm not holding my breath, though it's an honour to be nominated."

ONLY ONE UNRELIABLE OWNER
Will The Fauves new album ever sputter into life? German Engines was meant to be released on 16 March, to coincide with the band's San Remo show, which was also cancelled. "For a full explanation, please call 1800-TED-FUCKED-UP," the band says, explaining that bass player Teddy Cleaver missed his flight from Sydney, "forcing us to cancel a show at short notice for the first time in 24 years." This Saturday's show at the Toff was meant to be an album launch, but it's now an "album preview", with The Fauves claiming that German Engines will motor into stores on 11 May.

A PENNY, OR $100,000, FOR YOUR THOUGHTS
What better way to announce you're back in town than an appearance on Eddie McGuire's Millionaire Hot Seat? After more than a decade in the US, the delightful Penny Hewson is home in Melbourne. In a music-packed episode (also featuring Wilfred Jackal bass player, Andy), Eddie revealed Penny's LA stories: dancing with Morgan Freeman, nearly running over George Clooney, and Owen Wilson checking out her butt. Penny was in the much-loved Sea Stories, who released two albums at the start of the '90s - Miller's Pond and Wide Eyed And Dreaming. Eddie told the audience they were signed to R.E.M's label (I.R.S), while Penny revealed she had inked a new deal with Popboomerang Records. Penny passed on the question, "What classic novels begins with the words, When Mr Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced …" (The Fellowship Of The Ring), but returned to the hot seat to go all the way to the final $100,000 question: "Sing Sing Sing (With A Swing) was the signature tune for which jazz musician?" The options were Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Thelonious Monk. Penny locked in Duke Ellington, and added, "It'd be really bad if I go out on a music question." Unfortunately, she did - the answer was Benny Goodman. Penny walked away with $1000. Her album, It's An Endless Desire, will be out in July. She told Eddie that it was "late-night, melancholy and moody".
